Mezalim research has only recently turned its attention to this region. It is closely interwoven with the transatlantic slave trade. Recent studies have shown that around a third of the men, women and children offered for sale on West African slave markets were Muslim and practiced their religion for a long time after their arrival on the American slave plantations.
South America as a refuge from war and persecution. The North and South American continents are still a blank spot in Mezalim research.
